The Way We Sit, Sleep, and Support Ourselves in Pregnancy Matters More Than We Think

After over a decade of supporting women through pregnancy and birth, I’ve come to realize something that no one tells you in your first prenatal appointment: how you sit, sleep, and move throughout the day can directly affect how your baby settles in your body and how your labor unfolds.

I’m not just talking about posture or the occasional stretch. I’m talking about the way modern life has wired us to sit for hours, often slouched in chairs designed for boardrooms, not bellies. We weren’t meant to live this way, especially not during pregnancy. And yet, so many of my clients spend most of their days in chairs, cars, and couches, unknowingly putting pressure on their tailbones, tightening their hip flexors, and limiting blood flow to their pelvic spaces. All of this adds up. It affects how we feel, how well we sleep, how baby is positioned, and yes even how birth progresses.

Let’s start with sitting.

Most chairs tilt the pelvis backward and collapse the spine. During pregnancy, this can contribute to baby settling in a less-than-ideal position (like posterior or “sunny side up”), which can lead to longer, more challenging labors.

I often tell my clients:

“Your baby takes cues from your body. The more space you create in your pelvis, the more room baby has to find their best position.”

One simple change? Use a birth ball or a firm cushion to elevate your hips slightly above your knees while sitting. This encourages a forward-tilted pelvis which is your body’s natural blueprint for pregnancy.

Movement Is More Than Exercise—It’s Circulation, Connection, and Preparation.

I recommend clients get up at least once an hour, even if just to stretch, walk a lap around the house, or do a few gentle hip circles. Your lymphatic system doesn’t pump itself, you have to move to keep fluids flowing. Gentle daily movement helps reduce swelling, supports digestion, and yes it prepares your body for the marathon of labor.

This is where pregnancy pillows come in, and not just at night. While they’re incredible for sleep (and trust me, I believe deep rest is sacred), But what I’ve loved seeing is how creatively my clients use their Momcozy pregnancy pillows throughout the day. I’ve seen some of the most creative uses of pregnancy pillows during the day. I’ve had clients use them:

  • As back support while seated on the floor to encourage upright posture
  • Around their lower backs while driving or working at a desk
  • To prop up their legs during daytime rest, reducing swelling
  • As gentle bolsters during meditation or prenatal yoga
  • Or even as a safe, cozy boundary when lying on their sides for mid-day naps

These pillows aren’t just for bedtime they’re tools for alignment, rest, and body awareness throughout the day.

Why I Recommend Momcozy to My Clients

I have been sharing my Momcozy pregnancy pillows with my clients. We try different styles and sizes from the large pillow catalog they offer. I know I’ve mentioned this before, but the fact that Momcozy pillows are free from harsh flame retardants and offered at such an accessible price point makes a big difference. It’s been one of my go-to brands for a few years now because not every woman can afford a $1,000 boutique breast pump or pregnancy pillow. I truly appreciate that Momcozy offers thoughtful, up-to-date technology and comfort without the high price tag.

What I love most is when my clients use the pillow intentionally, not just for comfort, but to help them feel their bodies more fully. To take a pause. To let the pillow remind them that they’re carrying something sacred and they deserve to feel supported.

Pregnancy asks a lot of your body, but it also gives you constant opportunities to check in, realign, and care for yourself in deeper ways. How you sit, move, and rest during this time isn’t just about comfort, it’s part of your preparation. It’s part of how you communicate safety, space, and support to your baby.

If you’re feeling off, start small. Use a pillow. Sit on the floor. Breathe into your belly. Let your body tell you what it needs. And when you find something that helps, even a little, lean into it. This season is too important to muscle through uncomfortably.
